Andy enjoying his new job at DJL Diving

I started my divemaster trainee internship in March after doing my advanced and rescue courses at DJL. I really enjoyed my internship because it allowed me to really become a great diver and to experience what it would be like working as a divemaster. I was assisting on courses with the instructors, helping the divemasters with customers and of course fun diving with the other DMT’s. The amount of diving I did over a couple of months was unbelievable, and finished my internship with over 100 dives on Koh Tao.
During my internship I took the opportunity to expand my skills by doing courses that weren’t included in the dive master programme, such as the PADI 02 provider, Aqualung technician course and discover scuba dive leader. These extra courses showed me that the divemaster programme is just the start of my professional education.
After spending two and a half months doing my divemaster internship, and spending a little extra time getting additional qualifications, I left Koh Tao for a visit at home. Two weeks later I’m back on Koh Tao and working as a full-time divemaster at DJL. I love working as a divemaster, and after doing the internship and now working as a full time divemaster I cant imagine doing anything else. I know I still have a lot to learn but that’s why DJL is great, all the staff love diving and are always keen to pass on the knowledge they have.

another new face in the shop

Hi,

My name’s Neal. I’ve recently joined the team at DJL diving, and I’m excited to be here. I’ve been coming to Thailand either travelling or on holiday for over a decade, and am now finally, I’ve moved to Koh Tao.

I have been involved with diving for over ten years; I still have fond memories of my own Open Water Course in the Red Sea back in 2001. Since then, diving has been my reason to visit some of the most amazing, exotic places all over the world; including Australia, Bali, Egypt, The Emirates and of course Thailand.

Over this time, I’d always been mulling with the idea of ‘living the dream’ and chucking in the day job back home and pursuing diving full time. In 2008, I finally plucked up the courage to do so, and have not looked back since. I completed by Divemaster Internship and Instructor training in Egypt, where I worked teaching and guiding and gaining invaluable experience for two incredible years.

Then I decided it was time to seek new challenges, and have new settled in beautiful Koh Tao, with the fantastic DJL team. That’s the great thing about diving as a career, you can take your skills with you and live and work in so many different places.

I’m looking forward to meeting and teaching all you lovely Open Water students, and passing on the knowledge I’ve gained to our Divemaster Interns. Joining the Divemaster Trainee Internship Programme at DJL is one of the best ways you can gain invaluable dive experience, clock up a serious amount of underwater time, and learn from spending time with our experienced Instructor Team.

I’m also looking forward to expanding my own adventures and training, moving up to the next level in Instructor Training – The Staff Instructor Course, and getting into Technical Diving.

I can’t wait to meet you guys; fun divers and students alike over the coming months!!!

Welcome Sonja!!

Hey, my name is Sonja and I’m one of the Open Water Scuba instructors at DJL Diving. When I first came to Thailand I immediately fell in love with the island, its culture and of course its diving. I’ve decided to pursue diving to a professional level and I’m nowadays instructing in English and German.
Working for DJL is good fun since our all goal is to make people have a great time and enjoy their holidays. No matter if there are customers who are still a bit anxious about diving, students on their way to get certified as Open Water divers or divers which are more advanced – DJL is offering the full range for all levels. Therefore, it’s a great experience being an instructor and seeing people losing their fear, getting more and more comfortable under water and enjoying the fascinating underwater world around Koh Tao.
But our team is not only consisting of instructors, without the support of all the others working in the shop, bar and restaurant, resort and hostel as well as on the taxi and boat it would be impossible to provide what makes DJL unique: an excellent customer oriented service in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere!

DJL Minigolf evening

By djl_team, 14 July, 2011, No Comment

This week at DJL we decided to have mini-golf tournament with the instructors and staff taking on the divemaster trainees and a few of the days students. We all met for a few pre-round beverages after the days diving before heading down for the DJL Koh Tao open. It was a close contest with the instructors taking an early lead thanks to Simon ‘Tiger Woods’ Daunt sinking some amazing trick shots and Chris ‘Jack Nicklaus’ Smith with a hotly disputed hole in one early on. The divemasters then got into the swing of things (or maybe the beers were telling on the instructors) and hit back with some fine work from Niral ‘Happy Gilmore’ Patel and Dan ‘Chubs’ Cribben. With the contest in the balance it was left to Sonja ‘Shooter McGavin’ Geier to sink the winning shot for the instructors. We then headed back to the DJL pool bar where we disputed some of the decisions left on the course and how Si’s club head ‘fell’ off after a missed shot. Needless to say we all had a cracking time and the DMT’s challenging us to a re-match shortly.

Equipment Maintenance

By Bubble, 9 July, 2011, No Comment

I’ve been a part of the DJL team for over a year now, i decided i should continue my education by enrolling in the BSAC Equipment Technician course. This is a great way to improve my prospects in the dive industry. Not only this but it means i can maintain DJL’s equipment, from servicing regulators to mending BCD’s, its very important the dive equipment is looked after and fixed appropriately. Being with DJL is part of a team, it’s important everyone works together to maintain the great spirit and quality we offer around the shop and in the water. Now i have something more to offer, my new skills and knowledge with equipment maintanence. In diving theres always going to be more to learn, i enjoy looking into different aspects that interest me to further my career.
