Going Pro

By neilisnaked, 4 June, 2011, No Comment

I arrived on Koh Tao to do my PADI Open Water Diver course. I’d already booked with DJL Diving so I got picked up at the pier and started the same day. After four days of diving I decided to do my advanced course. This was the most fun I’d had so far.

After finishing my open water and advanced I left to continue my travels, but I soon realised I wasn’t finished diving on Koh Tao. I returned a week later to start my Divemaster course. I’m almost finished now and still enjoying it. I dive almost everyday and assist on open water courses when the instrucors need an assistant.

I’ve enjoyed everyday of my Divemaster course and it’s a shame I have to leave in three weeks, but I’ll be a certified Divemaster.

Coongratulations go to Alex and George for becoming Davy Jones’ Locker’s newest Deep Divers. Both arrived on Koh Tao as Open Water divers and enjoyed the Advanced Open Water course so much they decided to continue their diving education and complete the PADI Deep Diver Speciality course.
We did the final two dives on a wreck just south of Shark Island called the Trident. This is an exciting and challenging dive, but the added challenge gives greater reward. Conditions were good and as we did the second dive on Enriched Air we got to spend plenty of time on the wreck and really got the most out of the experience.
The PADI Deep Diver (certified to 40m) and PADI Enriched Air Diver (extend your bottom time) are just two of the many specialities we teach here at DJL Diving. Check out our website for more details and get the most out of your diving.

The Way We Deal With Beginners Problems

By neilisnaked, 20 February, 2011, No Comment

Hello! Having worked at Davy Jones’ Locker on Koh Tao for nearly three years I have always found my job to be very enjoyable and rewarding. The bread and butter of a working instructor is the PADI Open Water Diver course. This entry level certification always poses different challenges and no two courses are the same. PADI talks alot about transforming lives which I know can come across to some people as a bit cheesy but I see it as transforming any negative diving situations into positive ones.
Not every student diver is perfect when they first get in the water and people can have problems. Our job is helping people get over these problems. A common example is clearing a mask of water. The problem with problems is that you see or here of some intructors who will ignore the problem or let the odd student fall by the wayside. I’m proud at DJL that we spend time with students who may have had some difficulties, and give them the attention they deserve.
A recent student called Katy springs to mind. I think some people can feel pressured when they are finding things difficult and the rest of the students are getting it straight away. I think it’s important in these situations to remove the pressure which invariably leads to stress. Katy was in the pool with myself and three other students and was performing the skills very well but struggled a bit with mask clearing. The three other students were clearing their masks at the first attempt and I think Katy unnecessarily felt she was holding the group back and started to work hereself up which caused stress and therefore elevated respiration. Breathing is everything in diving and elevated respiration (rapid breathing) usually results in a rush job, more mistakes, more stress, more rapid breathing, more rushing, more mistakes, more stress etc. you get the picture. I decided to give Katy a break and she and I went back into the pool the following morning just the two of us. This I feel removed the pressure and therefore the stress. Unsuprisingly Katy did herself proud and nailed the mask skills first time without a hitch. Watching this develovement was very rewarding for me and Katy was clearly elated. The big positive in all this was not only that Katy rose to the challenge, re-joined the other students and completed the Open Water course, she loved it so much that she went on and took the PADI Advanced Open Water course. Katy is now an accomplished, confident, and happy diver. Power to her.
On a related topic we can also look at the importance of equipment. I spent time with Katy finding a mask that she was happy with. I’m sure most musicians will agree that nothing compares to the feel of playing your own guitar, violin, or whatever your instrument of choice may be. This is much the same in diving. There’s nothing like diving in the comfort of your own gear. The mask I would consider to be the most important bit of kit. They’re cheap, small, light and can make every dive that bit more enjoyable.
To sum up, at DJL Diving we guarantee to spend all the time necessary to see that all your needs are met.

A New Padi Professional

By neilisnaked, 25 October, 2010, No Comment

A big shout out to Nicole Richardson for becoming Davy Jones’ Locker’s latest PADI Divemaster. Nic came to Koh Tao in early August to do her Open Water course at DJL and despite her original intention of staying only a few days she decided to stick around to do the Advanced Open Water, EFR, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster courses. Two months later Nic is a Padi dive professional. She has been a big part of the school while she’s been here and having recently continued with her travels we’d like to wish her all the best for the future.
Congratulations.

Koh Tao Forever!

By neilisnaked, 2 October, 2010, No Comment

I arrived in Koh Tao with the intention of diving, id been here before and knew it was a great place to learn to dive. It was a bit daunting getting off the boat with the prospect of having to choose one of the dive schools, as there are so many i decided to shop around before i made my decision.
After going into a number of shops, i opted for DJL and have been so pleased about this decision eversince. DJL stood out to me not only because of the location and price but the staff are what really made it. I was made to feel so welcome and got on with everyone instantly.
I only planned to do my PADI open water course but went on to do my advanced and with the support of the staff i am now working towards becoming a Divemaster :)
p.s. Tip for the girls….Loreal water proof mascara stays on even to 30 meters!
