6 -7 metre Whale Shark at the Chumphon Pinnacles

By , 11 May, 2007, No Comment

Yesterday [10/05/2007] at the height of Koh Tao‘s whale shark season, we got another great encounter!

This time it was DJL Diving instructor Matt [again] with a group of certified divers, diving at the Chumphon Pinacles.

During the first dive, the group just caught a glimpse of the big fish. It was decided to make a second dive at the same site, and the decision paid off! The whale shark circled the pinnacle for the entire second dive. After a long session swimming with the whale shark, Matt decided to lead the group off towards barracuda rock [to have a look at some other fish]. The whale shark then followed them!

This one was about 6 – 7 metres long. The bad news is that it had a rope wrapped around it’s tail [presumably part of a net or buoy line]. The rope looked like it had been on there for sometime as it had eaten into the flesh causing a serious injury. Discussing with some other Koh Tao instructors, they report having seen the same whale shark, with rope last season [2006].

After seeing two whale sharks in the last 10 days, Matt has people queing up to dive with him!

Combine BSAC Sports Diver Training with a Sailing Liveaboard Expedition throughout the Gulf of Thailand!

By , 7 May, 2007, No Comment

BSAC Centre of Excellence No 484 (Davy Jones’ Locker Co Ltd)

On June 18th we’re departing for a 4 day / 4 night sailing liveaboard throughout the Chumphon Marine Reserve, Thailand. We’ll be diving on some recently discovered shallow wrecks plus checking out the islands & pinnacles throughout the marine park.

We’re offering the opportunity to combine the BSAC Sports Diver course with this exciting expedition. Get trained to dive to 35 metres, learning more rescue skills, and expand your diving knowledge and experience. Enjoy a stunning sailing liveaboard and dive some great wrecks & beautiful corals.

How it works:

We’ll conduct the first training portion of the course around Koh Tao, getting you comfortable in shallow water.

Once your skills are polished, we’ll depart on sailing liveaboard Sampai Jumpa for a four day / four night liveaboard. You’ll get some great diving exprience and witness some interesting wrecks. Tasty Thai & European food and comfortable cabins.

What do we expect from the Diving?

Chumphon Marine Reserve is much less dived than other areas of Thailand. During the entire expedition we won’t see any other dive vessels. Max depth will be about 35 metres, visibility should be good and water temperature will be around 30C. In terms of marine life expect to see a mix of corals – hard table, lobe and pore species, plus lots of deeper soft corals, sea whips and fans. There are many green and hawksbill turtles, masses of reef fish, sometimes squid and octopus plus many pelagic species. The two wrecks we will dive will be the ‘Dumb Dumb Maru’ & ‘Inverted Wreck’. Both were discovered in late 2006 and form interestig dives for different reason. The Dumb Dumb Maru has a nice penetration at the stern, and much of the superstructure remains intact to explore. The deeper Inverted Wreck is rich in marine life, and shows some great coral formations that you don’t find in shallower water.

Money

For certified technical divers the cost of taking part in the 4 day / 4 night tec liveaboard alone is 17,000 baht. For BSAC members we can provide the BSAC Sports Diver Course plus expedition for 24,000 baht (bargain)! For non BSAC members the cost is 26,000 baht. Flights are available direct into Koh Samui (or Bangkok) so transfers are easy.

Another Whale Shark Sighting off Koh Tao

By , 3 May, 2007, No Comment

Whilst conducting the last two dives of a PADI Open Water Course, DJL Instructor Matt Notte and his two students (Carina & Edward) got a close up encounter with a whale shark.

During Open Water Dive 3, the group saw a 4 – 5 metre long whale shark, which remained around the pinnacle for the entire dive.

Unfortunately no camera this time!
